An Inside Look at the Christmas in Europe Book
When I first dreamed up the Christmas in Europe Quilt and block-of-the-month program, it felt like the perfect way to celebrate my upbringing in Iceland and the rich cultural experiences I’ve gathered from my travels across Europe. Since its launch in 2021, the book has been almost three years in the making, and I love how deeply this quilt resonates with the warmth of Christmas and the beautiful traditions of Europe still to this day.
Many countries across Europe share similar holiday customs, but each one has a unique spin that makes it stand out. I love discovering these distinct traditions, learning their origins, and watching how they’ve evolved and spread across the world. That story is woven into this quilt—both in written form and in each block.
While each block tells a special story, I want to share a deeper look into a few of my favorites. These blocks reflect some of the most interesting traditions and showcase the diversity of how the holidays are celebrated throughout Europe.
Goat and Tomte
In Scandinavia, the Julbock, or Christmas goat, is made of straw and tied with bright red ribbons, harkening back to ancient Norse mythology. It’s said to have once been a bringer of gifts before Santa took over! Paired with the mischievous Tomte, a small gnome-like figure, this block captures the folklore and charm of Scandinavian Christmas traditions that have been passed down for generations.
Shoe in the Window
One of my fondest childhood memories is placing a shoe by the window, waiting for small gifts from the Yule Lads—13 mischievous pranksters from Icelandic folklore. Similar customs exist across Europe, where children leave out shoes or stockings in anticipation of presents from figures like St. Nicholas. It’s a tradition that fills the air with excitement and wonder for kids, which I try to capture in this block.
Yule Log
The Yule log has both symbolic and sweet meanings in European Christmas traditions. In many countries, it represents warmth and light, as families gather around the hearth to burn a log during the holiday season. And of course, there’s the delicious bûche de Noël, a chocolate Yule log cake that’s become a beloved part of Christmas feasts. This block celebrates both the hearth’s warmth and the festive sweetness that the Yule log brings to our tables.
Christmas Crackers
Cracking open Christmas crackers at the dinner table is a British tradition that’s fun and festive! Filled with small gifts, paper crowns, and jokes, these crackers are pulled apart with a snap, bringing laughter and joy to the holiday meal. The tradition has spread to other countries, and this block reflects the colorful excitement of these Christmas must-haves.
In addition to the quilt blocks, I’ve included four bonus patterns in the book where you can use these designs in smaller projects. These projects are perfect for adding a touch of European holiday spirit to your home in a fun, creative way.
This book is more than just a pattern book—it’s a blend of quilting and storytelling, with each block accompanied by its cultural history. You’ll also find delicious European holiday recipes, turning this into a coffee table book that invites you to explore both the stitches and stories of Christmas in Europe.
If you'd like to learn more about every block, bring these traditions and the magic of the season into your home, the Christmas in Europe book is waiting for you!
