How to Prepare your Quilt for LongArm Services

Pricing

We offer edge-to-edge quilting with hundreds of designs and various thread colors. If you have a particular quilting pattern that we do not have, we will gladly purchase it for you at your cost. Quilting prices are figured per square inch depending on the density of quilting. We will discuss these topics with you and present you with a quote for quilting your project.

Backing and Batting

  • Backings should be 8” longer and 8” wider than the quilt top for us to load it on the machine. For example, if your quilt measures 70” x 80”, your backing should be no less than 78” x 88”.

  • If the backing is pieced, make sure you use a minimum ½” seam and press the seam open.

  • Selvages should be trimmed off the backing.

  • The backing should be squared up and pressed.

  • We have a variety of high quality battings available for purchase. We prefer to use our own batting. However, if you want us to use your batting, please note that the batting must be of high quality and 8” longer and wider than your quilt top.

Quilt Top

  • Make sure the quilt is clean. We will wash quilts that smell like smoke or mildew prior to quilting which will add an additional cost for washing, pressing, and trimming threads

  • Check the front and back of your quilt for loose threads.Trim any long or loose threads on the back. Dark threads may show under light fabric

  • Please press your quilt top and backing well to have flat seams.

  • Make sure there are no loose seams or seams that have come apart.

  • Lay the quilt flat and check that the blocks lay flat. If they don’t, consider taking the quilt apart and re-sewing it because there is little we can do to quilt these blocks without puckers or tucks.

  • Check your borders.Make sure borders are not wavy. (Link to adding borders to your quilt - a Tipsy Tuesday?)

  • Stitch ⅛” around the edges of your quilt top to prevent seams from pulling apart

  • Mark the top of both your quilt and backing so it can be loaded correctly on the machine

  • Do not use pins or spray adhesives to sandwich your quilt with the batting and backing. We load each piece on the long arm machine separately.

Embellishments

Remove any buttons, pins, charms, sequins, pockets, ribbons,  or couching from the top.We are unable to quilt over any embellishments. Please wait until after the quilt is completed to add these items.
