I'm so excited to host another quilt along August 16, 2020 and introduce my newest pattern, Harmony. This quilt means so much to me as it was born out of the recent events that happened here in Minneapolis. Why Harmony, you may ask? Merriam Webster defines harmony as the following:

Harmony: 1) the combination of simultaneous musical notes in a chord 2) a pleasing arrangement of parts 3) an interweaving of different accounts into a single narrative

Harmony also means multiple voices from different origin and tune, joining together in one act, creating a united sound. To create perfect harmony, one voice can not be louder than another. Only when all voices, as diverse as possible, come together can magic happen that we feel in our hearts.

The Harmony Quilt block came to me in the wake of George Floyd’s murder here in Minneapolis. This happened just blocks from where Mr. Honey Producer grew up. The block is made from two strips wrapping together which can represent and stand for many things. In essence though, it is about one standing with another, equal and in unison, each one supporting and holding up the other.

How can we as quilters, not appreciate the idea of harmony? We so often take fabric that calls to us, fabric that we may have collected from different locations and travels, from friends, and loved ones that remind us of something special. We lovingly labor with them to create a pleasing arrangement, to bring different memories together to create a single story. We, too, know the magic that happens when those different fabrics work together to create an amazing quilt. We feel it deep in our souls. This is what I hope can happen for all of us as we listen to the different voices speaking now. If we just listen and give them a chance to work together I know we can make something truly special.

My quilt is personal, it represents Black Lives Matter. I chose light and dark strips for my block on a neutral taupe background. I wanted emphasize the black and white because that is my family, so my blocks show us standing arm in arm, challenging discrimination.

I had my wonderful long-arm quilter, Anne Hurlburt of Scandi Quilt Studio, quilt some words into the border of my quilt. Top and bottom say Black Lives Matter and the borders have 4 words: Love - Equality - Justice - Unity

As for our Quilt Along Day - I want you to take your own journey. This quilt does not have to represent the fight against racism. I made a second version with all the colors of the rainbow to show that I stand with the LGBTQ community and their fight for human rights and equality. Maybe you want to represent women's rights, show your support for an organization or unify with our health care workers in the fight against Covid. Because only if we all come together, we can make some great things happen.

This day is all about us coming together from all over the world, diverse as can be to enjoy creating together. There will be music, recipes, special guests, just like what we did with Hope and Elvira Quilt Alongs.
